School leaver destinations 2009

Each year the Careers Service prepares information on school leaver statistics.  This will include university destinations.

This information is collated to help inform young people about the choices they face. Teachers will also find it useful to help prepare lessons and to provide up to date information to help the students with their decisions and employer organisations in reviewing their recruitment.  For detailed graphs please click here or for an overview please see below. 

As an overview

Yr 10

  •  No Year 10 leavers this year

Year 11

  • Increase in post-16 full time education participation (75% 2009, from 71% 2008)
  • Decrease in 16 yr olds on apprenticeships (36 in 2009, 60 in 2008)
  • 80% (79% 2008) of 16 yr olds in education or states apprenticeship scheme
  • 82% (81% 2008) of 16 yr olds in education and any form of work based training (incl. apprenticeships).
  • Of those that left education, 22 were unemployed (22/136 = 16%). 2008 was 12% & 2007 was 14%.

Year 12

  • No real change in the number of leavers at the end of Yr 12. 84/520 - 16% in 2009 (compared to 83/530 - 16% in 2008 & 78/522 - 15% in 2007).
  • Of those that left education, 20 were unemployed (20/84 - 24% in 2009 compared to 12/83 – 14% in 2008).
  • 66 (9% of this age group) were on the apprenticeship scheme and 4 entered employment with other work based training.

Year 13

  • Number of 18yr olds in HE is about the same, 25% 2009 compared to 24% 2008 & 23% 2007.
  • Number of Yr 13’s entering HE has remained at 40% 2009.
  • Slightly more students taking Gap Years (42 in 2009, 37 in 2008). Just over half of last year’s gap year students eventually ended up in HE.
  • 42 leavers entered employment with ‘other work based training’ and 4 started apprenticeships.
  • Of those that left full time education, 14 were unemployed (14/199 = 7% in 2009, compared to 9/217 = 4% in 2008

Every unemployed leaver (56 in total all ages) has had contact with the Careers Service since leaving education, many of them have had multiple contacts as part of the tracking process.

School leavers across all age groups entered 193 (216 in 2008) different employers. Retail (67 students) replaces Finance (36) as the most popular destination with Construction (34) in third place. 2008 figures were Finance (99 students), Retail (61) and Construction (51).
