Post 18 and Local Employment Information Day held at the Grammar School and 6th Form Centre on the 25 June.

With over 300 students attending the HE and Post 18 Information day from all the island 6th form establishments it was important to get feedback from both students and universities/local providers about how the day went.

Rob Evans from The University of Sussex opened the session with valuable information on HE and this was followed by Jason Le Ray (Nat West offshore) on how he managed to succeed by staying on island.  The CIPD also contributed in an interesting way in their sessions on 'preparing for work'

The universities found our students very mature, keen to find out as much information as possible and well prepared.

131 students replied to a questionnaire on the year 12 Information day
Of those that responded:

  • 49% were thinking of going on to Higher Education
20% were looking at employment locally
    14% were unsure
    4% taking a year out
11% were considering a combination of the above.

The students considered the following as the most useful parts of the day:

  • Personal Statement sessions
    Group subject session
having the university representatives in to talk to
    Year Out presentation
    Preparing for work CIPD

 The subject presentation sessions that received the most positive comments were;

Art, Business, Biology, Construction, Economics, Engineering, Enterprise and Entrepreneurship,Film TV, Year Out, Geography, Interior Design, Journalism, Law, London Study, media, Medicine, Nursing and Midwifery, Psychology, Physical Sciences, Physiotherapy, Teaching. CIPD

Those subjects that were not rated as highly could be for the following reasons:

1.Numbers that attended the presentation were low and therefore the feedback was very limited. As little as one or two may have feedback information.
2. Presenters spent too much time talking about their university
3. lack of information on the different type of courses available in their subject
4. Students having to attend a session even though they were not interested in it.
