EMPLOYER FAQ

What is the States Registered Apprenticeship Scheme?

A scheme that allows young (and increasingly more mature) people to work in a recognised trade or craft and study for a qualification at the same time

What does the States Registered Apprenticeship Scheme offer employers?

The Scheme offers a training/financial package to support employers whilst their apprentice qualifies. The Scheme also ensures that Guernsey continues to maintain a skilled and qualified workforce to support its economical growth.

What exactly does this package offer employers?

Free training one day a week at the College of Further Education. A financial commitment (grant aid) that subsidises the day an apprentice is out of the workplace training. Grant aid is paid quarterly, total sums over an apprenticeship varying according to college attendance.

What commitment does an employer have to make to the Apprenticeship Scheme?

Any employer who signs up to the Apprenticeship Scheme is required to

  • provide on the job training in the workplace,
  • allow an apprentice to attend any agreed block release/day release/evening courses that the College determines are required for each particular trade
  • pay an apprentice for the time he/she spends at the College during normal working hours.
