I want to find out about Apprenticeships

What is an Apprenticeship? Apprenticeship hair show

An apprenticeship is a alternative to post-16 education, apprenticeships offer individuals who wish to go straight into the workplace after school, the opportunity to continue to study, alongside experienced staff to gain job-specific skills. It also provides opportunities for those wanting a career change, and adults returning to work later in life.

Working in partnership with local employers and the States of Guernsey, the Guernsey College of Further Education which is part of The Guernsey Institute is responsible for managing The Guernsey Apprenticeship.

Apprenticeships allow employers to build their future talent through the development of sector-specific skills and expertise, as well as the many transferable skills that come from learning in the workplace.

The College strives to respond to the emerging needs of the islands' industries, developing programmes that support and benefit the community and economy as a whole.

What does the training involve?

The Guernsey Apprenticeship offers the opportunity for an individual to earn a salary and gain a nationally recognised technical, professional or vocational qualification whilst working in industry.

Apprenticeships vary in length, depending on the sector, and take between 1 and 5 years to complete. 'Off-the-job' training is usually one day a week at the Guernsey College of Further Education with the rest of the week being spent working for the employer.

How do I know which industry to choose?

You need to find out which industry you are interested in and which one will suit you with your skills and interests.

You can use the KUDOS programme to help you check your interests and ideas. Use the A-Z search in KUDOS. You will need to use your Log-in given to you by your Careers Teacher. KUDOS This link opens in a new browser window

If you are not sure of your Log-in, ask your Careers Teacher or contact us.

You may have tried out a trade on work experience or in the College of FE Links course which can help you work out which trade is more suited to you.

How do I find an Apprenticeship?

You can check current vacancies here, you can also enquire about other apprenticeship opportunites by using the Apprenticeship lists in your school (ask your Careers Teacher) or by contacting the Apprenticeship Team at the College of Further Education Tel:  01481 227500 or apprenticeships@gcfe.net

Enrolments are now online and are open throughout the year, with most courses commencing in September.

You can contact the employers directly to check if they are interested in taking on an apprentice. You may need to send them a copy of your CV and a letter explaining your interest in the trade you have chosen. It can take a while to find an apprenticeship as not many get advertised so keep trying, even if the first employer you try is not offering an apprenticeship.

Qualifications required are sector-specific. Please look at the individual brochures to ascertain if there are entry requirements for your chosen apprenticeship.

Initial assessment for suitability and any necessary support and guidance is offered to those who have not achieved a minimum of four GCSEs at grade D/3 or above.

Those apprentices who have not achieved English and Maths qualifications will also be required to complete a functional skills programme through the College before completion of the apprenticeship.
