Guernsey Careers Service is part of the Education Department, Schools and Services Division and provides career information, advice and guidance for young people aged 14-21 years, plus anyone over 21 still in full time education. The Adult Guidance Service 21+ is based at the Careers Service although operates separately.
At the Careers Service, it is our intentions that we will enable young people to:
· Secure positive destinations on leaving school/college into education, employment or training
· Realistically prepare for the world of work to help sustain their employment
· Engage with lifelong learning and progression throughout their careers
· Raise their aspirations and encourage them to make realistic, informed choices about their lives
We will do this through:
- Helping young people 14-21 make realistic, informed decisions about education, employment and training
- Develop young people’s skills, knowledge and personal qualities needed for work now and in the future
- Helping young people raise their aspirations to support them in setting their own goals to achieve their potential
- Improving the relationship between education and employers to better understand the requirements of the world of work now and in the future
- Building partnerships with parents/carers and other agencies to help achieve positive outcomes for young people
The Services we provide shall be:
· Delivered by professional staff including Careers Advisers trained in career guidance
· Designed to deliver value for money and be cost effective
· Quality assured through impartial validation
· Impartial in all aspects of delivery
· Designed to meet the individual needs of young people and to overcome any barriers to learning
· Focussed on raising participation and achievement levels for all young people
· Aimed at extending opportunity for all young people through following equal opportunities principles and the Institute of Career Guidance (ICG) code of ethics
· Founded on evidence-based practice to ensure that all interventions are based on evaluation of what works best for young people
